Challenge
Ruth Harris was ready to give something back to her community. After a 20-year career in optometry, she felt drawn toward her original passion of education and signed up to be a volunteer literacy tutor. Fascinated by the reading process, she began gathering all the information she could in order to improve her effectiveness with her students. The search was challenging and frustrating at times, since most of the information she uncovered was targeted at professional educators or parents. She wished there were resources tailored specifically to the needs of volunteer tutors.
Success
Ruth's site has grown steadily, and she's constantly updating, adding new tips and resources for literacy volunteers. The site now has dozens of pages and links, and a steady flow of traffic. Not only is the site extensive, but it's also the only one of its kind on the Web as far as Ruth can tell. It gives her great satisfaction when she can help match prospective volunteers with programs that need them. She's also enjoyed the creative process involved in building and maintaining her site. She receives notes and letters of appreciation from all over the map, which have led to some great online friendships with fellow literacy aficionados.
Solution
Her search led her to a Masters program in reading instruction at a local university. She knew that most volunteer tutors would not end up going that route, so when one of her professors gave the assignment to build a Web page, Ruth knew exactly what she wanted to create. After trying out all the available online options, Ruth settled on Homestead because its open-ended design features allowed her to build from a blank page according to her own vision. She was also adamant about having a banner-free site. Within a couple of weeks, Ruth had put up a few pages that she was happy with, and her Literacy Connections resource center was ready to launch.
"I'm delighted with the beautiful images you've provided in your Premier Clipart Collection, and use them liberally. When people comment on how professional my site looks, I'm happy to tell them how easy it was with Homestead."
