Challenge
When Maria Capitelli was in high school, she was chosen to participate in a new enrichment program in the San Diego area. As an Aaron Price Fellow, she learned about government and civic responsibility through a series of activities highlighted by programs with local, state and national government headquarters. Maria wanted to stay involved so after college she returned to the program as a paid member of the staff. In addition to helping with the current students, Maria was also faced with the challenge of tracking down over
Solution
Although she feels herself to be pretty technically savvy, she had no idea how to begin. She started by investigating some other services, but she didn't like what she saw when she looked at their member pages. A perfectionist, Maria was adamant about having total control over her site. When a friend told her about Homestead, Maria found what she was looking for. With the SiteBuilder, Maria was able to get her page exactly right, using the colors, logo and font that appear on all other Aaron Price Fellows material. She created an extensive site with information for current and past members, as well as links for visitors wanting to learn about the program mission and volunteer opportunities.
300 program alumni for the annual holiday and beach parties. When she first came, existing information on former Fellows was scattered and out of date, and she needed a way to keep it organized and accessible.
Success
Maria was very pleased with the outcome of her site building efforts, and proud to show the site to her supervisors, who had never before used a Web site to communicate about their program. It's an ongoing effort to re-educate the current students to RSVP for events using the site, but for the program alumni, the site was an instant hit. Program graduates are now scattered all over the globe, and the site empowers them to stay in touch and organize for events. For those that can't make it to the gatherings, the pictures Maria posts allow them to get in on the fun from afar. Now, thanks to the site, alumni of the Aaron Price Fellows program have a place to keep their community alive.
"The Web site will make a huge difference in the future of the alumni program."
